Our behaviour and emotions are closely connected. Every day, our feelings influence the way we think, communicate, make decisions, and respond to different situations. Understanding this connection can help us understand ourselves and others better.
When we feel happy, we may become more friendly, active, and willing to communicate. When we feel angry, we may speak harshly or react quickly. Fear may cause us to avoid certain situations, while sadness may make us withdraw from others. These reactions are natural, but they can sometimes affect our relationships and decisions.
Our behaviour is not influenced by emotions alone. Past experiences, thoughts, personality, social environment, and learning also play important roles. For example, two people may experience the same situation but respond differently because they interpret it in different ways.
Emotional awareness is therefore an important psychological skill. When we recognise what we are feeling, we have a better opportunity to choose how we respond rather than reacting automatically.
A simple pause can make a difference. Before responding to a difficult situation, ask yourself:
“What am I feeling?”
“Why am I feeling this way?”
“How should I respond?”
Developing emotional awareness does not mean controlling or hiding our emotions. It means understanding them and responding in healthier ways.
Remember
Our emotions influence our behaviour, but we can learn to influence our behaviour through awareness and thoughtful choices.
Understanding your emotions is an important step towards understanding yourself.
