Maya received a message from her friend one evening.
“I’m disappointed with you.”
She immediately felt hurt and angry. Without thinking, she opened her phone and started typing an angry reply.
She wrote several sentences and was about to press Send.
Then she stopped.
“What if I am misunderstanding the message?” she thought.
Instead of replying immediately, Maya put her phone down and took a few deep breaths. After some time, she read the message again.
She decided to call her friend.
During the conversation, Maya discovered that her friend was not angry with her at all. Her friend had simply felt disappointed because they had misunderstood each other.
Maya smiled with relief.
That evening, she learned an important lesson:
A feeling can be real, but our first interpretation may not always be correct.
Sometimes, giving ourselves a little time before reacting can help us understand a situation more clearly.
š§ Psychology Behind the Story
Our thoughts influence our emotions, and our emotions can influence our behaviour. Pausing before reacting gives us an opportunity to examine our thoughts and choose a more thoughtful response.
Sometimes, the most powerful response is the one we choose not to send immediately.
